TENS procedure – for pain relief

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or TENS, is an electrotherapy procedure used to relieve pain. In medicine, such as rehabilitation and physiotherapy, electrotherapy is widely used in the treatment of various problems. TENS is commonly used to relieve pain in joints and muscles, as well as after surgery. Modern electrostimulation equipment includes many different programs not only for pain relief, but also for sports and fitness. For example, Compex Fit and SP electrostimulation equipment offer up to 40 specially designed programs for fitness, athletic performance improvement, recovery, etc.

The TENS procedure is used to relieve pain. When performing the TENS procedure, you will feel pulses of electric current, which are transmitted through the electrodes. Electrodes can be placed in different areas of the body where pain is felt, for example, in the lower back. Pulses of electric current in the TENS procedure stimulate the human nervous system, thereby reducing its ability to transmit pain signals and to the spinal cord and brain.

It is important to mention that the TENS procedure is not used to treat symptoms. But it can help against pain.

The TENS procedure is harmless and safe.

Living with pain is not easy. Taking painkillers for a long time is not recommended and they can cause various side effects, such as digestive problems or nausea. The TENS procedure is safe and harmless when used correctly. It helps fight acute and chronic pain without the help of medications.

How to use the TENS procedure?

Each TENS device is slightly different. Carefully read the attached instruction manual, where it is described how to use the device and how to place the electrodes. It is not recommended to use the TENS device more than 2-3 times a day (in 10-25 mine sessions). The TENS device is not intended to be used for a long time and very regularly, as your body may get used to this therapy and it may become less effective.

It is important not to place electrodes on the front part of the neck or face.

A couple of tips when using the TENS procedure:

  • Clean the skin where the electrodes will be placed so that they can better adhere to the skin.
  • Use an electrostimulation gel – it can be applied in a thin layer under the electrode to facilitate the passage of an electric current pulse into the nerves under the skin.
  • If you plan to walk or move during the TENS procedure, it can be wrapped with an elastic bandage to keep the electrodes in place better.
